7 Tips For Contributing With Impact
All change occurs through individuals. So, if you could solve one problem in the community, whether it is local or global, what would it be? Here are some examples:
· Addictions?
· Social isolation?
· Mental illness?
· Homelessness?
· Environmental problems?
· Struggling musicians and artists?
· Injustice?
· Another problem you know of?
Whatever that ‘one thing’ is, you could be playing a role in the solution right now!
You have the power to impact change! You can help by contributing to community projects which target the root cause of problems, addressing them with sustainable solutions. Make a difference by consciously choosing how you invest your time, talents and treasures.
How will you make a difference in the community?
Your time, energy and money are valuable, and there are so many organisations asking for help. When considering where to invest your efforts in making a difference, here are some useful tips.
1. Know your primary motivations. There are many reasons a person can have for wanting to contribute to the community, some of which may include:
· Satisfaction - Helping those less fortunate
· Strengthening community – Building relationships and connecting people
· Giving back – Expressing gratitude for the opportunities received
· Special Interest – Assisting projects which have special meaning or which inspire you
· Personal growth – Experiencing opportunities which stretch comfort zones and awareness
· Impact – Utilising skills, abilities and resources to achieve a result
· Legacy – Establishing knowledge, resources or money which can last for generations
What are your motivations for contributing to the community?
2. Consider how you can contribute. Reflect on what you have available to invest in terms of time, energy and money. Consider what you have to offer. How much time can you dedicate? What knowledge, skills and abilities could you offer? How much money could you donate? Make a firm commitment on how you will contribute. Then, incorporate it into your schedule and planning.
What time, energy and money are you committed to contributing?
3. Consider community projects you have a natural affinity with. Ask yourself where you perceive there is a need, and where you feel a natural affinity to give. There may be charitable projects already available which you can utilise. Alternatively, you could even choose to create your own. A great sense of fulfilment can come from projects you have a natural attraction to.
What project causes are you naturally attracted to?
4. Decide what kind of project you will invest in. Consider the resources you have available to invest, and how you can best use them to create an impact. Here are two key ways:
· Charitable Organisational Projects. Where the person typically plays a supporting role to a charitable organization initiated by someone else, with charitable purposes only. They may be set up as trusts, foundations, unincorporated associations and in some jurisdictions specific types of companies. Typically these projects are tax deductible.
· Philanthropic Projects. Where an individual or group supports a charitable project with a narrowly defined objective to make a recognizable change in social conditions. It often necessitates large donations and financial support sustained over time - a key distinction from charitable giving. It is a major source of income for artistic, musical, religious, educational institutions ranging from schools to universities, and humanitarian causes, eg high profile rock star Bono’s campaign to alleviate Third World debt to developed nations.
Where will you invest your time, energy and money?
5. Assess the desired outcomes of the project. When you are investigating projects, ensure that the outcomes are aligned with your sense of purpose, values and vision for the future. Here are some useful questions for assessing whether it is in alignment with your desired outcomes:
· Main focus of the project?
· Measurable outcomes of the project?
· Who are the benefactors?
· Does it Address root causes, rather than short term remedies?
· Does it provide education on prevention?
· Is the project and outcomes sustainable in the longer term?
Do the project outcomes match the impact you desire to be a part of?
6. Identify ways of incorporating contribution into your life. Examine each of the 8 key Wheel of Life areas, and consider where you could intertwine components of contribution.
· Business/Career
· Finances
· Relationships
· Spiritual
· Rest & Rejuvenation
· Physical Wellbeing
· Personal Development
· Community/Contribution
How will you incorporate contribution into your business and personal plans?
7. Set up the framework for taking action. Plan out the action steps required for achieving your contribution goals. Include key activities, scheduling times in your diary and regular payment dates. Then contact the relevant organisation - communicate your intentions and your specific commitment. This provides some extra leverage and accountability for following through, and it also helps them to plan.
What key actions need to be implemented to support your contribution goals?
Giving back to the community empowers you to impact positive change, and the satisfaction of helping others. A coach can help you to create a clear vision, strategies, tools and habits to achieve the contribution outcomes you truly desire, in both your business and personal life.

It highlighted to me areas of my life that were significantly out of balance, and surprisingly enough they seemed to be all the areas that were of highest importance to me. So it was just what I needed to inspire me into action, the cost to my wellbeing was too important not to follow Lisa’s guidance.” - Lisa Parker, Parker Investment Properties
