7 Tips for Strong Financial Foundations

Recently the newspapers, television and radio have been filled with news of banks raising their interest rates on loans, with potential for more as the year continues.  Inflation is rising and the economy is responding to ease pressure along with other market pressures.  The economy moves through cycles of boom times and bust times.  We don’t have control over the economy; we only have control over the way we manage our money and how we respond to circumstances.

Opportunity or Threat?

There are always opportunities and threats in the market place.  The answer to that question for you is based on your own perceptions, experiences and beliefs.  Don’t bury you head in the sand; know where you are financially.  Then create a strategic plan for achieving what you want and take action.  Be prepared to adapt to new situations.  Get started today by implementing these 7 steps:

1.  Review your income and expenditure patterns.  If you have a budget, assess how well you’ve been maintaining it.  If you have no budget in place, review or keep three months worth of income and expense receipts.  Put them into key categories so you can see what aspects in life you are spending on and the amounts.  Then ask yourself if these patterns are in line with creating a strong financial future.  If not, then it’s time to consider the impact if you continue the same patterns.

2.  Incorporate the “Wheel Of Life” categories into your financial goals.  It is important that your financial plan incorporates aspects which give your life meaning and purpose.  Ask yourself whether you are investing sufficient time, energy and money into activites which support your happiness, including activities which support your mental physical and spiritual wellness.  Then review your financial position in line with your goals addressing any shortfalls.  Remember to incorporate goals in each of the 8 key areas of the Wheel Of Life into your financial plan:

·         Business/Career

·         Finances

·         Relationships

·         Spiritual

·         Rest & Rejuvenation

·         Physical Welbeing

·         Personal Development

·         Community/Contribution

3.  Decide to create stronger financial foundations.  Now you know your financial position.  Set some specific short and long term financial goals around achieving financial security and financial independence, with specific dates of when you will achieve them.  The discipline of saving each pay period, is essential to creating financial stability and independence in the long term.

4.  Identify Perceived Limitations.  Your experience with the flow of money is related to what you  believe is, and is not possible.  To expand your financial wealth you must expand your thinking of what is possible.  This can be influenced by your conditioning, peers and experiences you may have had in the past, some of these you may be aware of, whereas others you may be oblivious.  By identifying and clearing away the energy these limitations hold, you attract more of what you want.

5.  Invest in Yourself & Gain 3 Key Benefits.  You are your greatest asset, so it is essential to invest time and money into training and development.  First, your money and possessions can easily be taken from you - your wisdom cannot.  Your bank of knowledge continues to grow from all perceived successes and failures, and increases your ability to re-build your wealth if there is a setback – faster and with less money and effort than before, because you then have better knowledge on howto do it!  Second, it assists in developing skills which are desired in the market place.  This can expand your opportunities, increase your current income streams further supporting your goals.  Third, by enhancing your financial knowledge, you can invest more wisely, maximising returns on your investments.
Are you regularly investing money to expand your wealth of knowledge, skills and abilities?

6.  Get Creative.  Brainstorm ideas on other options.  Make it fun, stretch the boundaries of your mind to come up with lots of different ways to utilise your funds.  Consider what you’ve done in the past, what friends, family, mentors etc have done.  Then, after you have a good sized list together, pick the strategies which you believe would have the biggest impact in maximising the use of your funds.
How could you generate additional income streams?

7.  Meet with a Financial Advisor.  Prepare a clear picture of your desired financial outcomes, then meet with a licensed financial planner.  Planners can review your financial goals with you and advise on the best ways to invest your money.  Accredited financial advisors invest in significant amounts of training and education to stay current with tax legislation and industry requirements.  They should be well placed to assist you in assessing various types of investments, including calculating potential rates of return, potential risks and the impact of different strategies on achieving your long term wealth goals.
Do you have a clear enough picture of your finances to meet with a Financial Advisor?
